We Need Your Support!

South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race

Our 24-year long commitment to facing race issues and challenging new impediments to racial integration and true inclusion is needed as much now as ever. Would you please consider making a donation right now to support our important work?

Throughout the last three months of the pandemic, and even since the start of 2020, we have adapted to meet community needs including:

  • Advocating for taking personal and community action in response to the police killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, consistent with our advocacy to hold local police accountable with the Community Forum to Review the Police Use of Force Report and the creation of community police boards
  • Hosting a Virtual Coffee House Discussion on housing, food, and the digital divide in SOMA during the pandemic
  • Bringing neighbors together for a special Luminaries in Action: Let us be the Light! to provide physical support, even in isolation during these stressful times.
  • Creating and distributing more than 3,000 copies of a COVID19 Resource Guide on access to local food resources and information on housing
  • Designing and posting Resource Flyers in multiple languages to direct people to local food pantries and information on eviction and foreclosure prevention

While we are undoubtedly living in uncertain times, the pandemic has not interrupted our focus and progress on initiatives we set in place last year, and the current national protests against police have galvanized our commitment to these initiatives: to strengthen the community’s commitment to racial and cultural inclusion of all people of color; and to ensure the sustainability of racial integration by supporting the current population of Black people and by developing strategies to increase the rate of Black in-movers.

We know that we will face challenges ahead—especially the racial inequities amplified by COVID-19 and its aftermath. We may not be able to bring people physically together for upcoming events like Coalition Month, or the rescheduled Conversations on Race with Jelani Cobb, but, we will continue to find new ways to carry on this good work and to be in community with one another.

In the spirit of ensuring a thriving, racially integrated community, please consider making your donation today of $100, $250, $500 or more today to support the Community Coalition on Race.

Sincerely,

Kelly Quirk, Chair of the Board of Trustees

Nancy Gagnier, Executive Director
