Anti-Asian Racism: Experiences in SOMA Coffee House Discussion

Register in advance here: Coffee House Discussion

Violence against Asian Americans has often been characterized as a recent phenomenon. However, anti-Asian hate has its roots in American history and often plays out in everyday life as microaggressions. At this Coffeehouse Discussion, Maplewood Middle School social studies teacher Ray Mantes will present the work he is doing to educate the school community about microaggressions toward Asian Americans. Local parents will add stories from their experiences to further illustrate how anti-Asian racism manifests itself in SOMA. Breakout groups will discuss the factors contributing to AAPI invisibility and what can be done to make South Orange and Maplewood more welcoming to Asian Americans and the role of education in making changes needed to make this possibility a reality.
