LIGHT UP OUR COMMUNITY IN HONOR OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. AND SHARE THIS SIGN OF PEACE WITH YOUR NEIGHBORS AND ESSENTIAL WORKERS
The Luminary Project is hosted by the South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race each year since 2013 at sunset on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday (the 3rd Monday in January). We ask people to light up the outside of their homes or businesses or other community venues with Luminaries -- white bags with votive candles inside that can be decorated with Martin Luther King, Jr.’s vision. The goal is for thousands of homes in SOMA to be lit up as a sign of hope, sanctuary, peace, and solidarity with Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community. The Luminaries come four in a pack for a suggested donation of $10 and it is a fundraiser for the Coalition.
This year, we celebrate The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race's 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance with a virtual, interfaith gathering Monday, January 18 at 2:00 PM on YouTube https://youtu.be/hkh36SYKLm8. Following that event, the community will light their Luminaries outside at sunset (approximately 5:00 PM).
Order your Luminary kits by email at [email protected] for contactless pick-up at 15 Coolidge Rd. Saturday January 16 and Sunday January 17 between 1- PM or on Monday between 3:15 - 4:30 PM or visit the businesses listed below.
