Program & Volunteer Coordinator — Full-Time (Exempt)

South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race

Salary: $48,000/year
Schedule: 40 hours/week, including regular evening meetings and occasional weekend events
Location: Hybrid — required in-person presence in South Orange/Maplewood for evening committee meetings, community events, and some office days; remote work available on other days.

About the Coalition

The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race is a progressive, grassroots nonprofit dedicated to building and sustaining racial integration in our two-town community. For more than 25 years, we have advanced racial, ethnic, and cultural equity through collective action, advocacy, education, and community programming. Our work is powered by a committed board, small staff team, and a large network of engaged volunteers.

Position Summary

We seek a full-time Program & Volunteer Coordinator who is deeply committed to racial equity and community engagement. This is a public-facing, relationship-centered role that requires flexibility, strong organizational skills, and comfort working closely with volunteers.

The Coordinator partners with the Executive Director and board-led committees to design, implement, and support programs that advance the Coalition’s mission. The role requires consistent availability for evening committee meetings, presence at evening and occasional weekend events, and regular in-person engagement, alongside remote and office-based work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate community programs in collaboration with volunteer committees and the Executive Director
  • Provide logistical, planning, and administrative support for committee meetings (many held in the evenings)
  • Manage program schedules, communications, budgets, and documentation
  • Maintain committee and program files (SharePoint), including agendas and minutes
  • Cultivate partnerships with community organizations
  • Support committees in developing annual goals and budgets
  • Track program data and contribute to reports and grant applications
  • Recruit, orient, coordinate, and support volunteers
  • Assist with grant proposals, including narratives, budgets, and outcomes
  • Facilitate or support workshops and trainings related to racial equity and inclusion

Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to racial equity, social justice, and culturally responsive practice
  • SOMA resident a plus; familiarity with SOMA needed
  • Experience in community organizing, program coordination, or project management
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with Canva, Constant Contact, and social media a plus
  • Grant writing or fundraising experience is a plus
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred

Work Schedule & Requirements

  • 40 hours/week, including regular evening meetings and occasional weekends
  • Hybrid role requiring in-person attendance at meetings, events, and some office days
  • Reliable transportation required
  • Ability to lift/move up to 25 pounds and operate standard office equipment

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $48,000/year
  • Paid holidays, accrued vacation, flexible scheduling, and year-end office closure week
  • Note: This position does not include health or retirement benefits
