Program/Volunteer Coordinator

The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race is a progressive, grassroots community group committed to racial integration. It is run by a diverse part-time staff and board of trustees and is supported by a large group of community volunteers. We have been providing Maplewood and South Orange with community marketing, problem-solving on race-related issues, and programs that bridge racial barriers for over 25 years. We are seeking a second part-time Program & Volunteer Coordinator to collaborate closely with our existing Program Coordinator. The two coordinators will share responsibilities and work together to develop and implement programs that support the mission of the organization.

As Program/Volunteer Coordinator, you will work with the current Program Coordinator and the Executive Director on coordinating programs, volunteerism, projects, and activities aimed at promoting racial diversity, equity, and inclusion in SOMA. Your role involves collaborating with various stakeholders, community partners, and committee volunteers to ensure the successful implementation of programs. Salary is $24,000 for 20 hours per week that include some regular weeknight meetings and occasional weekends for special events.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct volunteer outreach efforts and provide orientations for new volunteers
  • Assist with planning, development, and coordination of programs and their activities
  • Work to keep programs on schedule, within stated budgets, and functioning smoothly
  • Coordinate program communications
  • Collaborate with committee members and community partners on programs and event management
  • Assist committees in development of annual goals, objectives, and budgets
  • Record program data and assist in evaluation of program results and effectiveness
  • Assist with program-related grant proposals and budgets
  • Assist with training sessions and workshops on racial equity and inclusion for community members, organizations, and institutions

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and a deep commitment to promoting racial equity principles
  • Experience in community organizing
  • Experience in program coordination, project management, or nonprofit work
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and networking skills
  • Proficiency in the MS Office suite; working knowledge of social media and familiarity with marketing platforms like Canva and Constant Contact
  • Grant writing and fundraising experience is a plus
  • Complimentary degree and/or equivalent experience

Working Conditions:

  • Requires the ability to operate standard office equipment, including phones, monitors, and keyboards, and the ability to move up to 25 pounds
  • Needs to be comfortable working remotely and in person (in office and at meetings/events)
  • Must have reliable transportation
