The Pursuit of Racial Equity & Integration: A 25 Year Journey

WHAT: Join the South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race as it marks the organization’s 25th anniversary and reflects on its efforts to create and preserve racial integration. The event “The Pursuit of Racial Equity & Integration: The 25-Year Journey of South-Orange-Maplewood, New Jersey” will feature a virtual panel discussion to explore the ups and downs of the past as well as measures to stop resegregation in the future, providing a roadmap for communities with similar goals. Includes a special appearance by Maplewood’s own Grammy-nominated artist SZA.

WHEN: Tuesday, March 29, 2022, 7:30 - 9:00 PM ET

WHO: The South Orange/Maplewood Community Coalition on Race will host its 25th anniversary event where it will lead a discussion on lessons learned and the path ahead:

  • Remarks from New Jersey Secretary of State, The Honorable Tahesha Way (read bio here)
  • Panel moderated by Nancy Solomon, Managing Editor for New Jersey Public Radio and WNYC with members including:
    • Coalition Founders Fred Profeta (former Maplewood Mayor) and Carol Barry-Austin 
    • Coalition Executive Director Nancy Gagnier
    • Trustee Kelly Quirk (serving her third term as chair)
    • Trustee Abigail Cotler
    • Trustee Erin R. Scherzer
    • Committee member Patricia Canning
